Google's AI Mode now calls and books businesses for you — and it only picks one

At Google I/O on May 19, 2026, Google said its AI Mode had passed one billion monthly users and that agentic features which call and book businesses on a user's behalf would roll out to everyone in the US this summer. That rollout is happening now. When an AI places the call, your buyer never sees a list of ten options — the assistant picks one business and acts. Being that one is a different, harder problem than ranking on page one.

What Google announced

In its Google I/O 2026 Search post, dated May 19, 2026, Google reported:

Why an action layer changes the stakes for AI visibility

A blue-links page shows ten results and lets the human choose. An agent that calls and books shows zero — it decides, then acts. That collapses a ranked list into a single pick, and the businesses most exposed to it are exactly the ones people ask an assistant to book: the trades, home-services companies, med spas, clinics, restaurants. If the assistant doesn't surface your business at the moment it decides who to call, you are not on a lower page — you are out of the transaction entirely, and you'll never see the impression you lost.

It compounds a problem we already measure. AI answers are unstable run-to-run: in our repeat-question study, only 31% of recommended brands survived every repeat of the same query on the same engine. Now layer a default-model swap (Gemini 3.5 Flash) on top of that flicker, then hand the winning name an action to execute. The margin between “named” and “not named” stops being a traffic difference and becomes a booked-job difference.

The takeaway

If AI can now book on a customer's behalf, the only question that matters is whether the engine names your business when someone asks for one in your category and city. Measure it directly: a free 60-second check shows what ChatGPT and Perplexity say about your business right now (the $79 audit adds Gemini and Claude, 25 questions sampled three times each) — including whether you're the name an agent would act on, or the one it never reaches.
