For the first time, an engine recommended us: 1 cited mention in 144 answers, after four straight weeks of zero
Every Monday we point AskedAbout's own audit engine at AskedAbout — the same engine a customer's check runs on — and ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude the questions our buyers actually type. For four consecutive weeks the answer came back at zero. This week's run (2026-07-20, 13:12 UTC) is the first that didn't: ChatGPT named AskedAbout — and cited askedabout.com with a link — in 1 of 144 answers, on the exact query “How can I check what ChatGPT says about my business?”. One mention out of 144 is 0.7%, and the other three engines were still at zero, so this is a first data point, not a trend. But it is the first time the number moved, and it moved in a run where ChatGPT reached for the live web — which is exactly what a young domain publishing verified content is trying to earn. We publish the number either way.
Primary source: AskedAbout
The panel and the method
The self-audit is deliberately boring and fixed, so the number is comparable week to week. Twelve pinned buyer questions — “What are the best AI visibility tools for small businesses?”, “Is there a one-time AI visibility audit instead of a monthly subscription?”, “What is a good Profound alternative?” and nine more — run three times each against four engines (OpenAI, Perplexity, Gemini, Anthropic). That's 144 answers per run. We record whether AskedAbout is mentioned, whether it's cited with a link, and share-of-voice. The engine is the exact production engine that powers a paying customer's audit, so the number we report on ourselves is the number a customer would see on themselves.
This week's numbers (run of 2026-07-20)
| Metric | Result | Last week (2026-07-13) |
|---|---|---|
| Answers sampled | 144 (12 questions × 4 engines × 3 samples) | 144 |
| Failed runs | 0 | 0 |
| Mention rate (AskedAbout named) | 0.7% (1 of 144) | 0% |
| Citation rate (AskedAbout linked) | 0.7% (1 of 144) | 0% |
| Share of voice | 0.12% | 0% |
| OpenAI / Perplexity / Gemini / Anthropic | 1 / 0 / 0 / 0 mentions (of 36 each) | 0 each |
| Google Search Console impressions (28d) | 484, 0 clicks, avg position 56.3 | 244 |
For context: it had been 0 across every weekly run since we started tracking on 2026-06-27 — four consecutive weeks, 576 answers, zero mentions — which is exactly what “indexed by Google but invisible to the models” looks like from the inside. This week the streak broke by exactly one. The other numbers kept their shape: Search Console impressions roughly doubled again (244 → 484 over 28 days) while clicks stayed at zero, because 484 impressions at an average position of 56 is still page five or six. Publishing keeps moving impressions. This week, for the first time, it also moved a recommendation — once.
What the one mention actually was
Transparency demands the specifics, so here they are. The prompt was “How can I check what ChatGPT says about my business?” — one of our twelve pinned questions. ChatGPT's answer listed three category tools by name: Brand Aware, Citera AEO, and AskedAbout — described as a tool that “gives a quick check from several AI tools to see who they recommend in a given category and location,” with a live link to askedabout.com. Two details matter. First, it was a cited mention, not just a name-drop: the model attached the source URL, which is what turns a mention into a possible click. Second, it came from ChatGPT's web-search path — the citation carried a `?utm_source=openai` tag, the signature of a live fetch — not from parametric memory, meaning our published pages had finally become retrievable enough for the model to reach for them. That is precisely the mechanism the daily /news pillar and our data pages exist to build. It happened once, in one of three samples, on one of twelve questions. We are not going to call one answer a trend. We are going to call it the first.
Who the engines name instead
The more useful half of the data is what the engines do say when asked these questions. This week's most-named brands, out of 144 answers: ChatGPT (44), Gemini (33), Semrush (31), Perplexity (31), Peec AI (30), Otterly (28 as “otterly.ai”, plus 18 as “otterly ai” — one brand, two spellings our matcher counts separately, so treat the sum as an upper bound), Profound (25), AthenaHQ (16), Ahrefs (12). AskedAbout appears once — at the very bottom of the field, but on the board for the first time.
The pattern from prior weeks holds. The engines still routinely name themselves and each other — ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini are answer engines, not visibility-monitoring tools, yet they surface as “answers” to “what tracks my AI visibility.” And among the actual category tools, no single one dominates: the top specialist (Semrush, 31) is under a quarter of answers, and the ordering keeps reshuffling week to week — Peec AI went 33 → 30, Semrush 29 → 31, Profound 29 → 25, on a week when none of them shipped anything we can see. No tool in this category is recommended reliably yet — the category is unconsolidated, and the week-to-week shuffle among tools that changed nothing is itself a finding: a single measurement of your AI visibility is noise. You need the same panel, repeated.
What we changed this week, and the takeaway
We did not ship model-facing work this week aimed at moving this number: we kept the /news pillar publishing daily, rewrote page titles and meta descriptions to convert the search impressions we already own, and held cold outbound paused while the sending domain rests. So we read this first mention as a lagging result of accumulated published content finally becoming retrievable, not of anything we did in the last seven days. That is the honest causal story — publish verified pages long enough and the web-search path eventually reaches for one. Whether it holds — whether next Monday is one mention, zero, or three — is the only thing that will tell us if this is signal or a single sample.
The takeaway for any business reading this: the recommendation rate is the number that matters, it is a different channel from search, and it moves slowly and unevenly — ours sat at zero for a month and then registered a single cited mention. We measure ours in public. You can measure yours in 60 seconds, and if you're evaluating tools to track it over time, here's how the category compares — including, honestly, where we sit: one mention in 144, climbing from the bottom.

Who runs this
- Built and operated by Sensara LLC, Atlanta, Georgia — about us and how the audit works.
- See what the report looks like before you run anything — score per engine, the competitors AI names instead of you, and a fix plan.
- We run the same audit on ourselves every week and publish the result: in the latest run AI named AskedAbout in 1 of 144 answers. We report our own numbers the way we report yours.
