Did ChatGPT stop citing Reddit on August 14? Promptwatch measures an 86% drop in ChatGPT Search citations; our API read three days later still found reddit.com in 9 of 36 answers
Promptwatch, an AI-visibility platform that scrapes answers from the consumer interfaces of ChatGPT and Google, published on 2026-08-18 that reddit.com's share of ChatGPT Search citations fell from a steady 3.83% average between July 18 and August 7 to under 1% on August 14 and a 0.52% average over August 14–17 — an 86.4% relative drop — while its share in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode slid gradually (2.37% → 2.10%, −11.3%; 2.22% → 1.54%, −30.5%). Search Engine Land carried it on 08-19. Promptwatch's own page says the chart "shows when each change happened, not why" and that "a data-collection issue cannot be ruled out, so treat the size of the drop as provisional." Our weekly self-audit asks ChatGPT the same 12 small-business questions three times each through OpenAI's search API, and its 08-17 run — three days after the cliff Promptwatch dates — found reddit.com in 9 of 36 ChatGPT answers, the highest of the four weekly runs (2, 8, 2, 9 of 36). That is not a contradiction so much as a second surface: the consumer ChatGPT Search interface and the API search model are not the same pipe, and the one you track is the one you can speak to.

What Promptwatch published
The report tracks reddit.com's daily share of all citations returned by ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode from July 7 to August 17, 2026, counting only responses with at least one citation. ChatGPT: "From July 18 through August 7 it held a steady 3.83% average share of ChatGPT citations, one of the largest of any domain. On August 14 the share collapsed to under 1%, and the August 14–17 average of 0.52% is a 86.4% relative drop." An earlier step is dated too: "on August 8, the same day ChatGPT changed its query fanout behavior, Reddit's share fell from the high 3s to the mid 2s." The page's summary tiles read 1.50% for the past seven days (−54.4% against the prior seven) and 3.15% for the past 30. AI Overviews: 2.37% in the first seven days of the window to 2.10% in the last seven, "a 11.3% relative decline," with "no single sharp break." AI Mode: 2.22% to 1.54%, "a 30.5% relative decline," the clearest step at the end of July (2.06% over July 22–28 to 1.78% the following week). Method, as stated: "millions of prompt responses, citations, and click data from the actual user interfaces of major AI platforms." The caveat, verbatim: "The chart shows when each change happened, not why. A shift in ChatGPT's source selection is the obvious candidate, but a data-collection issue cannot be ruled out, so treat the size of the drop as provisional while we keep monitoring." Promptwatch sells AI-visibility tracking; the report is its own data. Search Engine Land (Danny Goodwin, 2026-08-19) reported the same numbers and the same caveat.
Our read of the same engine, through the API
Every week our self-audit asks four engines the same 12 questions a small business owner asks about AI visibility, three samples each — 36 ChatGPT answers per run, via OpenAI's `gpt-5-search-api` model with its own web search, which returns the URLs it cited. We counted answers whose citation list contains a `reddit.com` URL. The four runs straddle both dates Promptwatch names (08-08 and 08-14):
| Run | ChatGPT: answers citing reddit.com (of 36) | Distinct questions (of 12) | reddit.com share of ChatGPT's cited domain slots | Perplexity: answers citing reddit.com (of 36) | Gemini (of 36) | Claude (of 36) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026-07-28 | 2 | 2 | 0.85% (2 of 236) | 25 | 7 | 0 |
| 2026-08-03 | 8 | 6 | 3.32% (8 of 241) | 32 | 6 | 0 |
| 2026-08-10 | 2 | 2 | 0.84% (2 of 239) | 30 | 8 | 0 |
| 2026-08-17 | 9 | 5 | 3.36% (9 of 268) | 28 | 6 | 0 |
On 08-17, three days after Promptwatch's cliff, ChatGPT via the API cited reddit.com in 9 of 36 answers across five of the 12 questions — two of three on "How can I check what ChatGPT says about my business?", three of three on "Which tools show how ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini recommend businesses?", two of three on "How do I improve my business's visibility in ChatGPT and AI search?", and one each on two more — with threads from r/SEO, r/smallbusiness, r/GEO_optimization, r/SEO_LLM and r/SaaS among the 12 reddit.com URLs. The week before it was 2 of 36; the week before that, 8. reddit.com's share of ChatGPT's cited-domain slots, 3.36% on 08-17, happens to sit where Promptwatch's pre-drop ChatGPT Search baseline sat (3.83%). Perplexity cited reddit.com in 69–89% of its answers on every run; Gemini in 6–8 of 36; Claude in none of 144. Across all four engines, reddit.com is the single most cross-question source we record — it appeared on 11 of the 12 questions in every run of the question-span cut published this morning.
Why the two reads can both be right
Promptwatch scrapes the consumer ChatGPT Search interface; we call the search-tuned API model. They share a name and, presumably, much of a retrieval stack, but OpenAI has never said they share a source-selection policy, and the RESONEO reverse-engineering of ChatGPT's retrieval found behaviour that differed by tier and mode inside the consumer product alone. Our sample is also tiny (36 answers a week on 12 questions in one topic), and week-to-week it swings between 2 and 9 on its own — a week-over-week change of that size in our series would not be evidence of anything. What the series can say is narrower and still useful: the API surface had not stopped citing reddit.com as of 08-17. If the consumer drop is real and persists, it is a change in what a ChatGPT user sees, not in what the model can retrieve.
What this means for a business that cares about AI visibility
- Ask which surface your tracking tool measures. A Reddit-citation collapse in the ChatGPT app and a steady API read are both true this week. A report that says "ChatGPT" without saying which pipe is not yet a finding you can act on.
- Reddit as a route into ChatGPT answers just became less reliable in the consumer data, and was never reliable in ours. Two of four weeks ChatGPT cited reddit.com in 2 of 36 answers. Perplexity is where Reddit threads carry weight (25–32 of 36, every week). If a Reddit thread is your plan for being recommended, it is a Perplexity plan.
- Treat the number as provisional, as its publisher does. Promptwatch's own next step — compare the Reddit URLs cited before and after August 14 — is the right one, and it is the one we will take on the API side: the 08-24 self-audit run is pre-registered here as the next read. If ChatGPT's reddit.com answers fall to 2 of 36 or fewer on 08-24 we will say the API surface followed; if they stay at 6 or more, it did not.
