Can ChatGPT book you a restaurant table now? Yes — through Yelp, and the list of bookable restaurants is a product roster, not a ranking

Yelp announced today, on its official blog, that it is bringing Yelp Reservations and Waitlist directly to ChatGPT: users can book a table or join a waitlist at "thousands of top restaurants across the U.S. and Canada" without leaving the conversation. The post — bylined by Chad Richard, Yelp's SVP of Business and Corporate Development — says the launch "builds on our existing content integration, which provides ChatGPT users with reliable local recommendations," and that restaurants get in through one door: "For restaurants using Yelp Guest Manager this integration expands their access to the largest restaurant consumer network." That last sentence is the story. The set of restaurants an AI engine can transact with is now defined by which reservation software they run — a product adoption decision, not a visibility ranking.

The arc from licensing to transaction, in three dated steps

On 2026-07-23, Axios reported exclusively that Yelp was licensing reviews, photos and business data to OpenAI — at which point we published the pre-deal baseline: across 511 ChatGPT answers about real local businesses in our audit corpus, yelp.com was cited zero times out of 1,092 distinct domains, while ChatGPT mentioned Yelp, unlinked, in 11.0% of them — because Yelp's robots.txt closed its business pages to every AI crawler. Today's post confirms the second step happened: the content integration (reviews, ratings, photos inside ChatGPT) is described by Yelp as "existing" — live, not planned. And the third step, shipped today, skips citation entirely: a booking flow. Licensed data answered the question of what ChatGPT can say about a restaurant; Guest Manager answers what it can do.

Why this matters if you sell or buy AI visibility

What we have not measured, stated plainly

We have not yet re-run our local corpus against ChatGPT since Yelp confirmed the content integration live, so we do not know whether the 0-of-511 citation baseline has moved — that re-measurement is the natural follow-up, and our corpus audits no restaurants, the vertical where Yelp is strongest. Yelp's post gives no participation numbers beyond "thousands," no rollout timeline, and no detail on how ChatGPT chooses which bookable restaurant to surface first — the ranking question inside the walled garden remains as undocumented as every other engine's. What is checkable today: where the engines actually look before recommending a local business, and whether yours appears in any of their answers at all — the free 60-second check reads the source list straight out of the engines' responses.

Can ChatGPT book a restaurant reservation now?

Yes. As of Yelp's August 10, 2026 announcement, ChatGPT users can book a table or join a waitlist through Yelp at thousands of restaurants across the U.S. and Canada, without leaving the chat. The booking runs on Yelp's Reservations and Waitlist products, on top of the Yelp content integration (reviews, ratings, photos) that Yelp describes as already live in ChatGPT.

How does a restaurant get bookable in ChatGPT?

Through Yelp's software, not through optimization. Yelp's announcement ties the integration to restaurants using Yelp Guest Manager, its front-of-house reservations and waitlist platform. There is no content or markup change that puts a restaurant into this booking flow — it is a product-adoption decision, the transactional equivalent of licensed data.

Does this mean ChatGPT will now cite yelp.com in local answers?

It is now plausible and measurable, but not yet demonstrated in our data. Our pre-deal baseline (511 ChatGPT answers about real local businesses, June 12 – July 14, 2026) found yelp.com cited zero times, because Yelp blocked OpenAI's crawlers. Licensed access changes what is reachable; whether it changes the cited-source mix is exactly the before/after we pre-registered in July and will re-measure.
