Does posting on Instagram, TikTok or X get you cited by AI engines? In two corpora, three of Google's four new platform properties earned zero — and YouTube is a Perplexity story

This morning — Wednesday 29 July 2026 — Google's Search relations team announced that platform properties in Search Console are now globally available to everyone, alongside a new guide to analysing the data. Platform properties report how your posts on Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube perform on Google Search, Discover and Google News. It is a genuinely useful thing to have, and it prompts an obvious follow-on question we happen to hold data for: when an AI engine answers a buyer's question, how often does it cite those four platforms? We checked both of our citation corpora. Instagram, TikTok and X are cited zero times in both. YouTube is cited — 22 of 144 answers in the four-engine panel — and 21 of those 22 came from Perplexity alone, against 0 of 36 from ChatGPT and 0 of 36 from Claude.

What Google actually shipped

From the announcement, posted by Daniel Waisberg and Lizzi Sassman: “Earlier this month, we announced platform properties for Search Console, allowing you to track how your social and video posts on Instagram, TikTok, X, and YouTube perform on Google Search, Discover, and Google News. Today, platform properties are globally available to everyone.” The accompanying guide covers the Insights report's query groups, a 24-hour filter for spotting traffic spikes on recent posts, cross-platform exports into one spreadsheet, annotations for tracking whether a rewritten YouTube title or TikTok caption moved anything, and comparison mode for short-form versus full-length video.

Note the surfaces named: Google Search, Discover and Google News. AI Overviews and AI Mode are not mentioned, and nothing here reports any engine other than Google's — Google reports Google. That is not a criticism; it is the shape of the tool, and it is why the question below is not answerable from inside Search Console at all.

Corpus one: the four-engine panel, run 2026-07-28

Twelve buyer questions about AI visibility, three samples each, against OpenAI, Perplexity, Google Gemini and Anthropic Claude — 144 answers, 131 of which returned a machine-readable citation payload, totalling 1,465 citation entries. Citations are read from each engine's returned citation array, not from a substring search of the answer text; that is the same cut we published yesterday. (One reconciliation for anyone checking our arithmetic: yesterday's 538 domains is the host-level count. Collapsing hosts to registrable domains gives 526. The platform figures below are identical under either.)

Read the YouTube row twice. 58.3% of Perplexity's answers cited YouTube. None of ChatGPT's did, and none of Claude's did. That is not a small difference in degree, it is a different channel — and it is the same per-engine divergence we found across the citation corpus as a whole.

Corpus two: local buyer questions, cut 2026-07-29

Our production audit database, re-cut this morning: 1,048 completed engine answers across 177 audits in four local verticals — dentists, home services, med spas, personal-injury law. This corpus extracts URLs the engine typed into its answer text, and that instrument reads ChatGPT: 523 of 523 ChatGPT answers carry an in-text URL, against 11 of 525 Perplexity answers. So treat this cut as a ChatGPT cut and nothing more. It yields 1,112 distinct registrable domains, 1,105 of them from ChatGPT. An answer counts once per domain no matter how many times it links it, so the unit is answers-citing-domain, not links.

Searched against the full list of 1,112: youtube.com, instagram.com, tiktok.com, x.com, twitter.com and facebook.com do not appear at all. Not once, in any vertical, in any city. The only social platform present is linkedin.com, in 6 answers, and it is not one of the four Google added. What ChatGPT cites instead, when someone asks who to hire locally, is directories and review aggregators: birdeye.com in 142 answers, bbb.org in 92, bestprosintown.com in 82, medspascout.com in 63, threebestrated.com in 48.

Three things this changes about what you do next

  1. 1If your reason for posting on Instagram, TikTok or X is “so AI will cite us,” neither corpus supports it. They may well earn you Google Search and Discover traffic — that is precisely what the new report is for, and it is now free to measure. Just don't file the effort under AI visibility on the strength of an assumption. Two independent cuts, four engines, 667 answers between them, and the count is zero in both.
  2. 2A YouTube programme is a Perplexity bet. 21 of 36 Perplexity answers versus 0 of 36 from ChatGPT and 0 of 36 from Claude means the payoff depends entirely on which engine your buyers use. That is knowable before you commit a quarter to video — and it is cheaper to check than to assume.
  3. 3On local buyer questions, none of the four are in play at all. The surface ChatGPT reaches for is third-party directory and review pages, which is a different investment with different mechanics — the one we sized when we found AI cites directories constantly and recommends the businesses inside them 0.25% of the time.

The broader point is the one Google's announcement makes for us by accident. Search Console now measures four platforms on three Google surfaces, and that is a real gain. It still tells you nothing about what ChatGPT, Perplexity or Claude cite when someone asks who to hire — because no engine reports that to you. Run the free check and we will ask them the questions your customers actually ask, and show you verbatim whether you were named and what got cited in your place.

Do platform properties in Search Console show AI Overviews or AI Mode data?

The 29 July 2026 announcement names Google Search, Discover and Google News as the surfaces covered, and does not mention AI Overviews or AI Mode. Separately, Google's generative-AI performance reports for site properties (June 2026) report impressions within AI features — we covered what they do and don't tell you. Neither reports any non-Google engine.

Does posting on TikTok or Instagram help my business get cited by ChatGPT?

We cannot find evidence of it in our data. Across 144 four-engine answers (1,465 citation entries) and 523 local ChatGPT answers spanning 1,112 distinct domains, tiktok.com and instagram.com are cited zero times. That is an absence of evidence in two specific corpora — buyer-intent questions about AI-visibility tools, and local hiring questions in four US verticals — not a claim about every query on earth.

Is YouTube worth it for AI visibility?

It depends entirely on the engine. In our 2026-07-28 panel, Perplexity cited youtube.com in 21 of its 36 answers and Gemini in 1 of 36, while OpenAI and Anthropic cited it in none. If your buyers ask Perplexity, YouTube is one of the most-cited domains available to you. If they ask ChatGPT, our data shows no return.
